A published study in the New England Journal of Medicine, finds that a meager 1.5 percent of hospitals are fully computerized, and only another 7.6 percent have at least a basic EMR system. Individual practices have also been slow to embrace the technology and some of the reticence can be attributed to cost, concerns of computer failure or steep learning curves. However, since the Obama administration has allocated $19 billion for health information technology – with the majority going to doctors who have electronic records for their Medicare and Medicaid patients – this should provide the added incentive doctors need to take the plunge.
