New Growth Seen in E-Prescribers

According to the leading electronic prescribing network, Surescripts more then 100,000 e-prescribers are now transmitting prescriptions electronically. This is a marked improvement from two years ago when only 19,000 were using these networks. Even through more physicians, their assistants and nurse practitioners have embraced this technology; it still represents only 10% of eligible prescriptions. On the upside, as more physicians adopt this method, pharmacies will be well equipped to accommodate them. At the end of 2008, 76% of community pharmacies and many mail-order pharmacies were connected to accept e-prescriptions

Electronic Medical Records Shows Slow Growth

According to a NPR report, electronic medical records or EMRs have been slow in gaining acceptance by hospitals. A published study in the New England Journal of Medicine, finds that a meager 1.5 percent of hospitals are fully computerized, and only another 7.6 percent have at least a basic EMR system. Individual practices have also been slow to embrace the technology and some of the reticence can be attributed to cost, concerns of computer failure or steep learning curves. However, since the Obama administration has allocated $19 billion for health information technology – with the majority going to doctors who have electronic records for their Medicare and Medicaid patients – this should provide the added incentive doctors need to take the plunge.

Your Medicare Payments Could Be Reduced

Beginning October 1, 2008 your Medicare payments could be reduced if the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) needs to collect overdue taxes that you owe. The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, Section 1024, authorizes the IRS to reduce certain federal payments, including Medicare payments, to allow collection of overdue taxes. Should you owe such taxes and your payments are reduced, your remittance advice will reflect a provider level adjustment code (PLB) of "WU" in the PLB03-1 data field.
